Catchment Area

The designated LESCHD catchment area is approximately 50 blocks in size located in the Lower East Side, also referred to Loisaida by its Latino population and more recently coined the East Village by the latest wave of students and young professionals. It is bound by 14th Street on the north, Avenue A on the west, Houston Street on the south and East River Drive to the east. The  area features a ten acre park, Tompkins Square Park on the west, East River Park on the east and is dotted with local neighborhood gardens.

The majority of LESCHD units are in rehabbed tenement buildings of six floors or less in height, located on sites throughout the area. The general scale of these buildings is in keeping with the greater community of old style tenements. The well-maintained properties and streetscape appearance of the buildings blend in with the adjacent privately owned residential dwellings.
